SCHOLARSHIPSTHE ALBERT H. PAGE SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Fund shall provide two (2) scholarships per year, one (1) for a son and one (1) for a daughter of Local 340 Teamster members, for use in pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university of the recipient's choice. Each scholarship award shall be for one year only and shall be in the
amount of $500 for each winner. Applicants for the scholarship award must graduate from high school during the 2011-2012 academic year and have passed their College Entrance Examination and been admitted to a college. They must be the sons or daughters of Local #340 members or sons or daughters of members who have retired in good standing from the Local Union. Sons and daughters of deceased members of Local #340 are also eligible. Legally adopted children and stepchildren are eligible as natural children. Sons and daughters of members who are on withdrawal card, but who have
not retired are NOT eligible. Monies for the scholarship awards shall be accumulated from voluntary donations from members and from the Local General Fund. The Local Union may provide incentives from time to time in order to promote donations. REGULATIONS Recipients must attend a college accredited by the Federation of Regional Accrediting Commissions of Higher Education. These institutions are listed in "Accredited Institutions of Higher Education" published by the American Council of Education. If the recipient is unable to attend college due to a medically certified illness, the scholarship will be held in abeyance for not more than one (1) year. If schooling is interrupted by military service, the scholarship shall be held in abeyance until the recipient is discharged from the military service, but not more than four (4) years. When returning from military service, the scholarship holder must notify the Local Union and apply for readmission to college within ninety (90) days and return to school within six (6) months thereafter. Scholarship money will be deposited periodically with the college or university attended by the student and may be applied only towards legitimate school expenses, such as tuition, room, board, books and miscellaneous expenses. If a scholarship recipient should quit school after the scholarship money has been paid on his behalf, the unused portion of the money shall be returned to the Fund. METHOD OF APPLICATION AND METHOD OF AWARD Any student eligible under the rules set forth above may apply by submitting his application on a form that will be provided by the Local Union upon request. All applications must be received at the Local Union Office no later than May 1, 2012. The lottery system shall be used to determine the winner. The Executive Board shall pick out the name of one (1) male and one (1) female, as well as an alternate winner from each group. This will be done at the Executive Board Meeting scheduled for May 2012. Should either winner fail to enter college at the beginning of the academic year for any reason other than specified in the regulations, the Executive Board shall then make the award to the appropriate alternate winner. (There shall be only one award per family.) These rules apply to the year 2012 only. The Executive Board shall review and amend these rules every year in order to provide awards based on the financial status of the Fund and make the changes that are deemed beneficial in our efforts to promote and support advance education for our member's eligible children and for our eligible members. ____________________________ Carl Guignard, Secretary-Treasurer
James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Awards $430,000 for 2011-2012. James R. Hoffa became a Teamster member in 1934 and served as General President for 14 years, and, in recognition of his tireless service to the Union and its members, was honored as General President Emeritus for life. At the November 1999 General Executive Board meeting, General Secretary-Treasurer C. Thomas Keegel presented a resolution to establish the new scholarship fund. This site describes the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund (JRHMSF) and outlines eligibility requirements and application procedures. The 2011/2012 scholarship for high school seniors’ deadline was March 31, 2011. The James R Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund is an independent organization established and registered as a tax exempt entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Fund is established solely to provide scholarships to the children and dependents of members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and contributions to the Fund are deductible as charitable contributions to the extent permitted by law. The International Union provides certain in kind services to the Fund, such as this portion of the union web site, in order to benefit members and their children and dependents. Each year, 100 scholarships are awarded. Applicants compete in one of the five geographic regions where the Teamster parent’s local union is located. Thirty-one of the awards total $10,000 each and sixty-nine of the awards are one-time grants of $1,000. The scholarships are disbursed to the college or university at the beginning of the recipient’s freshman year. An impartial committee of university admissions and financial aid directors choose recipients based on academic achievement, SAT/ACT scores, character, potential, and financial need. The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship quadruples the amount of money given by the Teamster National Scholarship, the previous award. While money from the past scholarship came from the Teamsters General Fund, the James R. Hoffa Scholarship is self-sustaining. The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship was established by resolution of the General Executive Board in 1999. Information on how to support the scholarship can be found on the Internet at www.teamsters.org. Due to the great number of applicants and because the program is extremely competitive, all applicants must comply with eligibility and application criteria. Please contact our office for an application. The Fund has added a second scholarship, and annual Essay Contest, which starts in July each year with a deadline of September 30th annually and the fund awards fifty one-time $1,000 awards. The Essay Contest is for children/grandchildren of Teamster members who are enrolled in a university, community college or in a technical/vocational program and are age 23 years old or younger. (Student must be graduated from high school to be eligible to apply for the Essay Contest.) For eligibility requirements and other details about the contest visit www.teamsters.org to download the information. The 2011 JRHMSF Essay Contest is now open through September 30, 2011. Congratulations
to the 2011-2012 winners of the Joint Council 10 New England Scholarship. Joint Council 10 offers scholarships to the children of Teamster members.
